Central Nebraska Irrigation Project

Cargill and Nestle Purina are supporting an irrigation project that is being implemented by The Nature Conservancy and the Central Platte Natural Resource District. This project is focused on providing technology to Central Nebraska farmers that assists in their irrigation decision making. The project provides participants with a flowmeter to quantify water use, weather station to provide information on field conditions, pivot telemetry to increase control of the pivot, and moisture probes to understand dynamics of the crop and water in the soil profile. The program evaluates the benefits of these tools to both the producer and to local conservation needs.

Objectives

Engage 50 growers in central Nebraska to reduce ground water impacts of irrigation for corn and soy production by 2020.
Second Party Verified

The project reached full enrollment of 50 participants during the 2020 growing season. All participants received pivot telemetry, a flowmeter, and weather stations. The project also offered cost share for soil moisture probes, approximately 25% of the participants opted to use moisture probes. The project generated a total of 1.9 billion gallons of water savings from 2018-2020. Feedback from producers indicates that they are continuing to use at least one of the tools and many have expanded the technologies onto other fields in their operation.
